ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR SCHOOL OF PHLEBOTOMY
The School of Phlebotomy faculty has specified the following nonacademic criteria (essential functions) which all applicants are expected to meet in order to participate in the professional practice.
- Observation: The applicant must be able to participate actively in all demonstrations and clinical laboratory experience in the professional program.
- Communication: The applicant must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently transmit information to patients, fellow students, faculty and staff, and all members of the health care team.
- Motor: The applicant must have sufficient motor function to be able to perform
phlebotomy procedures that require lifting, bending, and stooping motions. In addition, the student must be able to demonstrate manual dexterity on the handling of small or delicate items.
- Intellectual/Conceptual, Integrative Quantities and Abilities: The
applicant must possess the emotional health required for full utilization
of the application of intellectual ability, the exercise of good judgment,
the prompt completion of all responsibilities, and the development of
mature, sensitive, and effective relationships with patients, fellow
students, faculty, staff, and all members of the health care team.
Applicants must also be able to tolerate taxing workloads, function
effectively under stress, adapt to changing environment, display
flexibility, and learn to function in the face of uncertainties inherent
in clinical laboratory problems. Compassion, integrity, concern for others,
interest and motivation are personal qualities which each applicant should
possess.
