Cytogenetics

The Cytogenetic laboratory at Detroit Medical Center is the largest full service facility in Southeast Michigan. We provide comprehensive test menu for prenatal diagnosis, congenital anomalies, mental retardation, infertility, hematological malignancies, solid tumors, and others using the latest technology and methodologies. The laboratory offers high quality conventional chromosome analysis on amniotic fluid, chorionic villi, peripheral blood, bone marrow, and various malignant tissues. In addition, molecular cytogenetics by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is offered to complement chromosome analysis. The laboratory also offers array CGH also known as chromosomal microarray (CMA) for prenatal, postnatal, solid tumor and hematological malignancies. Microarray uses DNA isolated directly from multiple tissue types for the detection of copy number gains or losses throughout the genome at resolutions beyond standard chromosome and FISH analysis. In addition, the microarray has the ability to detect copy-number neutral loss of heterozygosity (LOH), also known as absence of heterozygosity (AOH), that may not be detected on other microarray platforms.

The DMC University Laboratories Cytogenetic laboratory provides top quality diagnostic care to high risk prenatal clinics as well as one of the leading cancer centers in the country, Karmanos Cancer Institute. The laboratory is staffed by two MD Directors board certified in Clinical Cytogenetics and highly skilled cytogenetic technologists who are certified as Clinical Laboratory Specialists in Cytogenetics by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Registry for Medical Laboratory Personnel, Inc.

Our laboratory directors have over 40 years combined experience in clinical cytogenetics and are committed to providing the highest standard diagnostic care to support clinical practices. Directors are available for consultation to discuss patient test results, provide recommendations for diagnosis, follow up, and additional testing. The laboratory is supported by clinical geneticists and highly trained genetic counselors who are available for pediatric, high risk pregnancy, neurogenetics, and cancer clinics.
