Specimen Requirements

Specimen Labeling

All specimens submitted for testing must be properly labeled with patient name, MRN, date collected, and name of physician.  Specimens must be accompanied by a CIS requisition or a DMCUL requisition form. 

Plasma Acylcarnitine Profile—Collect 1- 2 ml of plasma into green top (sodium heparin). Refrigerate or freeze. Send to the laboratory refrigerated or frozen.

Plasma Amino Acid Profile —Draw 2-3mL of whole blood into a green top blood collection tube. Send directly to the laboratory unless time and distance are an issue. If so, centrifuge the sample, collecting a minimum sample of 1 ml of plasma. Refrigerate or freeze. Send to the laboratory refrigerated or frozen.

CSF Amino Acid Profile- Draw 2-3mL of CSF into a sterile syringe. Send a minimum of 1 ml CSF to the laboratory for analysis. Refrigerate as necessary. Send to the laboratory refrigerated or frozen.

Random Urine Amino Acid Profile —Collect 2-3 ml of random urine. Send to the laboratory refrigerated or frozen.

Organic Acid Profile (Urine) —Collect 2-3 ml of random urine. Refrigerate or freeze. Send to the laboratory refrigerated or frozen.

Carnitine Profile (Free and Total Carnitine)—Serum. Minimum volume 2 ml serum. Refrigerate or freeze. Send to the laboratory refrigerated or frozen.
