The Toxicology Laboratory does a wide range of tests for toxicological purposes. These tests range from extensive drug testing for the purposes of identifying drugs of abuse to monitoring drug levels to be sure our patients are receiving the proper amount of a therapeutic drug. A GC-Mass Spectrometer is used to identify a broad spectrum of different drugs that may be presents in the patient’s blood or urine. The GC-Mass Spectrometer is highly specific and provides us with a “chemical fingerprint” of the drug or metabolite with the highest degree of specificity and sensitivity. Other tests in Toxicology include measurement of blood lead levels in children as well as adults, ethylene glycol, ethanol, and methanol.
